One of my favorite times is singing to Lincoln before lying him down. Old worship
songs, corny commercial jingles and anything by Ray Lamontagne are the usual. I
find myself venturing out to lullabies lately, however. Particularly, ‘Hush
Little Baby’. I remember mom always singing it to us and each night the words would
be completely different. That’s what I love, it never has to be the same.
I’d like to share with you tonight’s version:
Hush Little Lincoln
Don’t say a word
Mama’s gonna buy you a mockingbird
and if that mockingbird don’t sing
Mama’s gonna buy you a diamond ring
and if that diamond turns to brass
Mama’s gonna buy you a looking glass
and if that looking glass should break
Mama’s gonna buy you a T-bone steak
and if that steak has too much bone
Mama’s gonna buy you the Thunderdome
and when that arena gets boring and old
Mama’s gonna buy you a grill of gold
and if that grill makes your breath stinky
Mama’s gonna buy you a rainbow slinky
Don’t say a word
Mama’s gonna buy you a mockingbird
and if that mockingbird don’t sing
Mama’s gonna buy you a diamond ring
and if that diamond turns to brass
Mama’s gonna buy you a looking glass
and if that looking glass should break
Mama’s gonna buy you a T-bone steak
and if that steak has too much bone
Mama’s gonna buy you the Thunderdome
and when that arena gets boring and old
Mama’s gonna buy you a grill of gold
and if that grill makes your breath stinky
Mama’s gonna buy you a rainbow slinky
Occasionally, my husband joins in and we alternate verses. A
few things “Daddy’s gonna buy”? A set of golf clubs and a Can-O-Farts.
Gee....How had I never thought of Can-o-farts before??
I think of mom sitting in the hallway singing to us everytime I sing that to Kyle. She was WAY more creative with the lyrics than I will ever be.
ReplyDeleteI hope you all remember Daddy-O singing that to you too...I loved "harmonizing" with Mom...we tried to be there for you every night. And remember the renditions of "You Are My Sunshine" customized with each of your names. I still sing that often as I pray for each of your families as I "lay me down to sleep".
